These days, snail mail is virtually a thing of the past – but the popularity of online ordering has risen dramatically. Why? Convenience. For some people, paying extra for the things they use most to be delivered right to their door far outweighs taking the time to go find them in-store. And in this era of truck-to-door expediency, a new trend has captured the attention of customers around the globe: Subscription boxes.
Subscription boxes are the new “it” service nowadays – bringing beauty products you might not have heard of right to your home, or providing ingredients and an accompanying recipe 3x a week. There are virtually thousands of different boxes available to order, but we’re going to highlight three different subscriptions and show you why their success stands out:
The women behind Birchbox started shipping personalized beauty product selections in 2010 to alleviate the confusion of navigating a “vast range” of choices. They took a well-known (but often not discussed) problem for women everywhere, and found a simple and often beautiful solution. Since launching, they’ve expanded to include boxes for men, have operations in 6 different countries, and have sold millions of boxes to happy customers around the world.
Success Model: Birchbox designed the theory that shopping for beauty products shouldn’t be so difficult, and trying new ones shouldn’t have to break the bank, by providing monthly, customized deliveries for one low price.
Graze was started by “seven friends sick of chips and candy, who wanted a better way to snack.” The subscription service allows you to select from a range of ninety snacks, based on your own preferences. You get to rate snacks based on like, love or want to try, and your weekly or bi-weekly box is customized accordingly. Not only does the Graze team strive to create exciting combinations of flavors, but they also make sure to curate only the highest quality of ingredients and offer only snacks that provide health benefits for you.
Success Model: The team at Graze recognized an entirely different sort of trend, and designed a business concept around it. Health food isn’t just for vegetarians and hippies anymore, and the Graze idea of tasty, healthy, inexpensive portions fits right into the growing market.
MI Makers Box
Of course we had to give a shoutout to one of our favorite clients! The MI Makers Box was launched this year to provide a subscription service of handcrafted, Michigan-made items delivered right to your front door. The team at MI Makers is “inspired by the dreamers, the believers, the entrepreneurs and the makers who spend countless hours honing their craft and devoting every ounce of their being to making high quality products right here in the state we love.” The boxes not only provide you with wonderful mitten state products, but allow you to support small business across the state as well.
Success Model: MI Makers Box’s targeted audience of Michigan enthusiasts will truly appreciate the time and effort that goes into curating the products for every single subscription. MI Makers boxes are also billed as the perfect and unique gift for corporate clients – If you’re sick of sending the same old fruit basket, this service was designed for you.
We think the box trend is pretty awesome, and will only continue to grow and evolve as more and more businesses recognize the benefits and appeal of delivery subscriptions. What do you think?
